SUCCESS STORY

TOWN HALL MEETINGS HELD THROUGHOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE

New Hampshire joined the rest of the nation recently as 16 communities hosted Town Hall Meetings on Underage Drinking. On and around March 28, hundreds of communities across the country hosted Town Hall Meetings as part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences, and to encourage individuals, families and communities to address the problem. Using "New Hampshire's Strategy to Reduce Underage Alcohol Problems" as a template (www.new-futures.org), communities discussed what's already working in their communities and what needs to be done to reduce underage alcohol use. Representatives from the Town Hall Meetings and state officials will convene on May 9th in Concord to discuss local strategies and develop action plans. For more information about what you can do to raise awareness of underage alcohol problems in your community, contact Aviva Meyer at ameyer@new-futures.org.

The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) released its latest report: "Underage Drinking in the United States 2005: A Status Report". The report summarizes up-to-date, relevant research and data on underage drinking. Highlights from the report include that girls are binge drinking more and boys are bingeing less or increasing their bingeing at a slower rate than their female peers. Also, 12th-grade female drinkers and binge drinkers are now more likely to drink distilled spirits than beer. For more information, visit: http://www.camy.org.

  4. FEMALE YOUTHS IN U.S. MORE LIKELY THAN MALES TO INITIATE ALCOHOL, CIGARETTE, OR MARIJUANA USE
Girls ages 12 to 17 are more likely than their male counterparts to initiate alcohol, cigarettes, or marijuana use, according to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. These findings are of concern because rates of substance use among young girls already rival those of young boys. For more information, visit: http://www.cesar.umd.edu/cesar/cesarfax/vol15/15-11.pdf

Underage drinkers and adult pathological drinkers (those that meet the clinical DSM-IV criteria for alcohol abuse or addiction) consume between 37.5 percent and 48.8 percent of the value of all alcohol sold in the United States, according to an article in the May 1 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. CASA's related White Paper, The Commercial Value of Underage and Pathological Drinking to the Alcohol Industry can be found online at http://66.135.34.236/absolutenm/templates/PressReleases.asp?articleid=437&zoneid=56.

The Council of State Governments recently released an issue brief that draws attention to the unmet needs of women with mental illness who are victims of crime, and constructs a core set of policy and practice recommendations for serving this population within the contexts of both the criminal justice and mental health systems. The issue brief reviews existing literature, provides information on existing programs and resources, and recommends the elements of a national agenda to be advanced by federal agencies.
