Parents Night in Mascoma Valley

Last Wednesday night I took a long, cold, dark, windy drive to Mascoma Valley, and it was well worth it.  I went to Mascoma Valley High School and, yes, I had to look it up, it’s in Canaan which is Lebanon-ish and on the western side of NH.  A wonderful colleague asked me to come and have a conversation with parents about alcohol and other drug prevention, intervention, and treatment, and that is an opportunity I can never turn down.  I can always find time, even when it’s cold, really cold.

The Mascoma Valley Prevention Network is sponsoring a series of Parent Nights, and I had the privilege to be one of the featured speakers.  I met a fantastic group of committed parents, had the pleasure of seeing my long-time friend Alice Ely, the coordinator, and heard about the Student Assistance Program services in the district from Donlan Wade, LADC.

We had a two-hour conversation with lots of laughs and insightful questions from the group.  It reinforced my firm belief in the power of prevention coalitions and local prevention direct services and treatment resources.  I woke up with a smile the next day, remembering my ride home that was not that cold, or that windy.  The excitement that I have at the opportunity in my current work to make a difference for communities throughout NH, is fueled by those such as the wonderful community of parents that I met from Mascoma Valley.  Mascoma Valley, remember now you have a new excuse to hug your kids!
