Suggestions for Parents of Graduates
Following are ten suggestions for parents to reduce the risks associated with high school graduation parties:
- Remind teens that their actions have real consequences: economic, health, and legal.
- Find out how your teen is getting to and from the graduation party.
- Know where the party is being held and verify with an adult who will be supervising.
- Confirm and make sure alcohol will not be served by the hosts.
- Tell teens to check in with you first from a landline telephone if they plan to leave the party early and go someplace else.
- Remind teens never to ride with anyone who’s been drinking or doing drugs.
- Assure your teen that they can phone you anytime to be picked up.
- Set and enforce a curfew.
- Be clear about what you expect and be firm.
- Volunteer to supervise or host an alcohol free party at your home.
